Bowel Cancer Awareness Month

Barlow Irvin’s Protection Specialist, Jade Winstanley, is always here to help.  This month Jade talks about bowel cancer.

April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month.  More than 90% of people who have been diagnosed with bowel cancer suffer with the following:

Persistent changes in bowel habits
Blood in poo without any other signs or symptoms of piles
Abdominal pain, discomfort or bloating always brought on by eating

More than nine out of 10 cases of bowel cancer develop in older adults over the age of 50, with six out of 10 cases developing in people aged 70 or older.

Other features to be aware of are:

Family medical history
A diet high in red and processed meats increases the chances of bowel cancer
A diet high in fibre reduce the chances of bowel cancer
Smokers have a higher chance of being diagnosed with bowel cancer
